Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has just signed a deal with the country’s biggest pharmaceutical company, to get the country’s highest-profile drug to be sold in Brazil as the only one for the country’s health care system. In the first of several talks with the company, the President will sign a deal worth more than US$1 billion (US$1.3 billion) this year, the country’s top-selling drug maker said on Tuesday.
Bolsonaro’s company, Teva Pharmaceuticals, said the deal will give it more money to make an “important and profitable” drug to treat the disease, which is the most common kind of sexual dysfunction. The drug will be sold at a pharmacy in the state of Parana, Brazil’s second-largest city. The deal with Bolsonaro comes after he announced last week that he was willing to buy the drug in the country for $5 to $6 per tablet. The drug will be sold under the brand name Viagra, which Bolsonaro has said has “no commercial interest”. “We are willing to go forward with this,” Bolsonaro said. “It’s an important drug, but it will be important.”
Bolsonaro will also have the right to negotiate prices with the Ministry of Health. A Viagra spokesman said the drug had stopped advertising for its “strongest” impotence medicine in years.
Dr John W. Hittner, the company’s president, said the drug had “decreased sales in the U. S.” The company had increased sales of Viagra in 2003 and had sold the little blue pill in 2006.
